Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States have discovered a new pathway that can naturally purify phosphorus in seawater, a pathway that depends on diatoms. The research results were published in the recently published "Science" magazine in the United States.
Diatoms are an autotrophic microorganism that lives on the surface of water bodies such as oceans and lakes. In the course of the study, Associate Professor Aleris Gheorghe of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology and his doctoral student Giulia Dias collected organisms and sediments near the island of Vancouver Island in Vancouver, British Columbia. After observation with a conventional light microscope, it was found that the diatoms in the collection stored high concentrations of phosphorus in the form of polyphosphates.
For a long time, scientists were unable to quantify the difference between the amount of phosphorus in the ocean and the phosphorus content of the river washed into the ocean. They found that some of the sediments were polyphosphates, some were minerals called apatite, and others were intermediate states of the two substances. They have already proved that there is a link between phosphate and apatite. Next they intend to achieve the mutual transformation of these two types of substances through experiments.
It is reported that this discovery not only explains the self-purification mechanism of seawater to a certain extent, but also opens up new research fields on how phosphorus can participate in normal life activities such as reproduction of organisms, storage of energy, and production of substances.
