Researchers at Purdue University in the United States have developed a super-strong aluminum alloy material with great potential for industrial applications. The research results were published in the recent issue of Advanced Materials magazine and November 2017 Nature Communication. The paper highlights how to change the microstructure of aluminum materials to achieve high strength and ductility. This high-strength aluminum alloy is produced by introducing "stacking faults" or distortions in the crystal structure. Metal lattices have a series of repeating atomic layers that, if missing, become stacking faults. "åªæ™¶ç•Œ" is composed of two layers of stacking faults.
A stacking fault called the 9R phase has a very special meaning. The researchers introduced the 9R phase and the twin boundary in aluminum by special methods, which improved the strength and ductility and increased the thermal stability. The industrial application of this material will revolutionize the automotive and aerospace industries.
