MIT reuses electric vehicle batteries for storing solar power

According to foreign media reports, a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) said that old electric vehicle (EV) batteries can be reused to store electricity generated by large solar power plants. MIT researchers said that even if batteries that have lost 80% of their original capacity, the investment prospects of participating in the solar + energy storage project in California will be better than the purpose-built utility batteries, and such "second life" electric vehicle batteries The cost is only 60% of the purchase price.

Ian Mathews, co-author of the MIT study, acknowledged that there are still technical obstacles to large-scale use of old electric vehicle batteries, such as how to bring together batteries from different manufacturers and screen which batteries can be reused. However, Mathews insists that there are still sufficient commercial reasons to prove that old electric vehicle batteries have cost advantages in recycling, screening performance, and redeployment.

The researchers used semi-empirical models (including some previously prepared calculations) to estimate the degree of battery degradation, and concluded that clustering energy storage devices to run at 15% to 65% of electricity can extend their Second life. The researchers say that this discovery challenges some of the previous assumptions that, at the beginning, batteries operating at maximum capacity can provide the most value.

Mathews said that whether such secondary life electric vehicle batteries can store electricity will depend on what kind of supervision and rate setting mechanisms they will operate under. He said: "For example, some local regulations allow the cost of energy storage systems to be included in the total cost of new renewable energy supply systems in order to achieve the purpose of setting rates, but some method rules do not allow."

The researchers say that longer pilot studies are needed to assess the potential of such systems.

MIT researchers also pointed out that during the project, the control algorithm needs to be adjusted to extend the life of such facilities. Mathews said: "We think this is a good application of the machine learning method, which is to try to find such intelligent methods and predictive analysis, and adjust such control strategies during the project."

Mathews added that the successful use of electric vehicle batteries for grid energy storage also requires the participation of electric vehicle manufacturers, energy storage companies, solar project developers and power electronics experts. (Yu Qiuyun)

teapot set

One of the teapots worth mentioning is the long mouth teapot, which is commonly used in tea ceremony performances.

The long beaked teapots we saw for the performance are mostly bronze, and some are made of iron and tin, also known as the long spouted teapots. A tea maker with no flow is called a no flow pot, which can also be slightly raised; Short flow kettle --- a teapot with the spout water outlet separated from the chamber within three inches; Medium flow kettle --- the distance from the water outlet to the kettle chamber is about three inches to two feet; The teapot whose spout is more than two feet away from the pot cavity is called a long flow pot. In ancient times, the spout of Changliu Pot was usually three feet long, which is why the commonly known "one meter long pot" came into being.
