An acoustic levitator is a very interesting device that can use reversed acoustic waves to make small objects suspended in mid-air. Recently, scientists from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil developed a more advanced acoustic levitation device, not too picky accurate positioning of its various components, practicality greatly enhanced. In a conventional acoustic levitator, the ultrasonic waves generated by the transducer move down to a concave reflector within a short distance. In this way, the upward-moving reflected wave encounters a new downward-moving sound wave between the transducer and the reflector.
Among them, two sound waves interfere to form a standing wave, and the pressure created at the place is sufficient to make the light items stay in place, such as falling liquid.
Typically, the transducer and the reflector must be exactly the same, and the relative distance to be very precise, otherwise the acoustic resonance can not normally, but also the standing wave crashes. However, this device developed by the University of São Paulo is unique and can be used as a non-resonant acoustic buoy. This means that the alignment and distance between the two main components can be changed, even if it is floating the object without any problems. In addition, by changing the direction of the mirror, the hovering object can also move in mid-air.
So far, the new device has only suspended 3 mm polystyrene balls. Once new progress is made, researchers hope it can be used to suspend larger items such as harmful substances and drugs.
According to the project leader Marco Aurélio Brizzotti Andrade, the new device can also be applied to manufacturing. Hundreds of robots are used in modern factories to carry parts. If possible, why not try a more convenient acoustic levitator?
