Biosynthetic hydrogen technology can make the hydrogen fuel industry more environmentally friendly

American researchers may have found a more efficient and cleaner method to produce hydrogen.

Chemists are looking for more environmentally friendly methods to replace the current complex hydrogen production process. They believe that biosynthesis of hydrogen may be a more effective method.

This research will help the global hydrogen fuel industry become more environmentally friendly.

Researchers from the University of Illinois and the University of California, Davis published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and stated that biosynthesis of hydrogen is more efficient than current synthetic processes.

The focus of this new study is called hydrogenase (hydrogenases) of the enzyme. These enzymes are "natural machines" that make and burn hydrogen. They have two types: nickel-iron and iron-iron. More specifically, this study analyzed the types of iron. The researchers believe that this is because iron-iron hydrogenase works more efficiently.

The research team learned from a general understanding of the chemical composition of the enzyme's active site that the enzyme's engine consists of two identical "clusters" consisting of five chemical substances. These chemicals include two carbon monoxide molecules, an iron ion, a cysteine ​​group and a *** ion. These chemical groups together form a tightly coupled unit, and the two units are joined together, resulting in each "natural machine" consisting of a total of 10 parts.

Researchers' research on biosynthesis of hydrogen is incomplete.

"Our formula is incomplete. We now know that an active biohydrogen engine requires 11 parts instead of 10. We are looking for the last one."

At present, the researchers admit that they are not sure what type of applications may arise from their new understanding of iron-iron hydrogenase. Nevertheless, this may have some guiding significance for other catalyst design projects.

Biosynthetic hydrogen research is both interesting and promising for the hydrogen fuel industry, because researchers not only envision using real enzymes to produce hydrogen, but they now have a good understanding of its composition, which can be replicated in the laboratory use.
