Anti-perovskite oxide shows zero resistance characteristics
Kyoto University, Japan, announced on December 13, 2016 that superconductivity has been found in Sr3-xSnO, an anti-perovskite oxide compound containing negative metal ions and oxygen. This is the first time in the world that superconductivity has been found in anti-perovskite oxides, which has brought a good beginning for the study of precious oxides containing negative metal ions.
Ordinary metal elements release electrons in the compound, forming positively charged cations. However, in a certain compound, metal elements absorb electrons and form negatively charged anions.
As a very common substance group, "Perovskite Oxide" shows a variety of properties. In addition to the discovery of superconducting phenomena in oxides for the first time, there are super giant magnetoresistive materials and the like, in which the resistance largely changes after the magnetic field is applied. As its "mirror" anti-perovskite oxide, it has not been studied before.
The research team synthesized an anti-perovskite oxide, Sr3-xSnO. 3-x in the formula indicates that the Sr moiety is insufficient. The researchers observed zero resistance as a feature of superconductivity from the material and eliminated the negative effects of magnetic flux. The substance is decomposed in air immediately, so the experiment is basically carried out in argon or vacuum.
In the past, superconductivity was found in perovskite oxides, which laid the foundation for the discovery of high-temperature superconductors and the promotion of research on super-magneto-resistive materials. This discovery has brought the opportunity for attention to anti-perovskite oxides, and is expected to speed up the existence of superconductors and whether there are other interesting properties and other related research.
In addition, from a topological point of view, some of the anti-perovskite oxides, because they contain negative metal ions, are also theoretically predicted to be "topological substances" in which the electronic states are distorted. The superconducting material may also be a "topological superconductor" with superconducting and topological properties.
